ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has voted today (20th June) to increase the number of Internet domain name endings to a limitless number that can be in any language . Currently there are 22 generic top-level domains (gTLDs) such as .net and .com and approximately 250 country level domains (ccTLDs) such as .uk.
Under the new scheme any company can apply for the rights to a new suffix as long as they can demonstrate a legitimate claim to the word. Applications can be made from 12th January 2012 and will cost £114,000. While the change is unlikely to impact on smaller organisations, analysts suggest that global companies will apply for new domain names that incorporate the company name.
